Downloading
Where can I download the ControlMyNikon or Cinematographer Pro installation files from?
Is it ok to download ControlMyNikon or Cinematographer Pro from any other source?
The official files are located on the download page.
No. You will find ControlMyNikon and Cinematographer Pro available for download from other websites, but those are not the official download files. Often these other websites will add an installation 'wrapper' that installs malware or worse on your computer. Don't trust those websites. Obtain your installation files exclusively from www.controlmynikon.com.

How do I install ControlMyNikon or Cinematographer Pro?
Are the installer files safe?
How do I uninstall?

The installation files are scanned with VirusTotal. This service scan using over 40 different popular virus and malware scanners. You can request a free scan of any file less than 20 meg and get the scan results in minutes. We also digitally sign our installation executables under 'Tetherscript Technology Corporation'. If you do not get a 'Are you sure you want to install software from TetherScript Technology Corporation' kind of dialog when you first run the installer, then the installer file is not valid or official.
An 'Uninstall ControlMyNikon' or 'Uninstall Cinematographer Pro' shortcut is located in the start menu. You can also uninstall it from the Windows Control Panel 'Programs and Features' (Win 7) or 'Add or Remove Programs' (Win XP).
Connection Issues
I cannot connect to the camera. What's wrong?
I have Windows 7 with a D40/D40X/D80/D200 and it won't connect. Why?
I don't see PTP mode on my camera. Where is it?
Check out the following tutorial video for troubleshooting connections.
These models have older drivers and Nikon does not provide a Windows 7 driver for them. However, you can get it to work by setting the compatibility mode to 'Vista SP2'. Just right-click on the shortcut, select properties from the popup menu, compatibility tab, and then select compatibility mode to Vista SP2.
The camera USB mode needs to be set to 'PTP' mode. Do not set it to 'Mass Storage' mode. Newer cameras such as the D7000 do not have this option and are always set to PTP.

How many computers can I use the purchased product key on?
Can I resell the product key, or give it away?
I typed in the product key but the program says invalid key. Why?
Will I be able to use the same product key for future versions, or will I need to purchase a new key?
Your product key can be used on up to three computers that you own. Example: You own a netbook, laptop and desktop computer. Just use the same product key on all three computers and you are good to go.
No.
Best to copy and paste from the email you received after your purchase.
The same keys have worked on the eleven versions between version 2.0 and 3.0 and we expect this to continue for awhile. There are no guarantees that the same product key will work for versions further in the future (like a year or two after you purchased it).
Money Back Guarantee
If I am not satisfied with the software, can I get my money back?
Yes. We are confident that you will be satisfied and offer a 90 day money back guarantee. We just ask you to describe the problems that you are having with the software and give us a chance to make it right. After several years, almost all the refunds that we have given are to Mac users, who thought they were downloading a Mac version when none existed. We are working on that Mac version.
Nikon
Are you affiliated with Nikon?
No. We have no relationship with Nikon whatsoever other than using their excellent SDK.
USB Connectivity
Will this non-Nikon USB cable work?
I hate wires. Can we use the software with a wireless connection to the camera?
Can I run the cable through a USB hub?
What is the maximum length of a USB 2.0 cable?
We only support the use of the official Nikon USB 2.0 cable that comes with the Nikon camera. Since Nikon supports this cable, we are very sure that it will work. We do not support and cannot guarantee that non-Nikon third-party USB cables will work properly. If you are having problems while using a third-party cable, try switching back to the Nikon cable and try again to see if that helps.
No. The problem is that the wireless tranceiver at the camera end needs power, and usually this means a power cord, negating the benefits of wireless. Some have hacked together battery operated transceivers, but this is not available for purchase.
No. Hubs can cause unpredictable problems. Connect directly from computer to camera.
A single cable run should be no more than 15 feet in length. You can go longer than that by using 'Active' USB 2.0 cables.
Supported Operating Systems
Is there Mac version?
Are there versions available for iOS or Android devices?
Not yet, but there are plans for this in the future.
No. Unfortunately, Nikon does not provide a SDK and drivers for these devices, so we cannot communicate with a Nikon DSLR from iPhones, iPads and Android devices. We hope that Nikon includes this support in the future.
Supported Nikon DSLR's
Which DSLR's are supported by ControlMyNikon and Cinematographer Pro?
Why does Cinematographer Pro only support the D5100 and D7000?
Why isn't my Nikon DSLR camera supported?
What is the Nikon SDK?
The supported devices are listed on the download page.
These two bodies are the only ones that allow remote video control while tethered. Even though other bodies may allow you to record video, they are not supported for remote video control via the Nikon SDK.
Nikon only allows tethering to certain camera bodies. Almost all new bodies are supported, except point and shoots. Some older bodies such as the D70 are supported by the Nikon SDK, but are not supported by ControlMyNikon or Cinematographer Pro.
The Nikon SDK is a Software Development Kit offered by Nikon to allow developers to write software to control Nikon devices.
Known Issues
ControlMyNikon v3.0
Cinematographer Pro v3.0
- On some computers, two access violation errors occur when you start up ControlMyNikon. These occur due to a failed load of the Nikon Raw Image drivers and will prevent you reviewing raw images within ControlMyNikon. As a workaround, just click on the errors and ControlMyNikon works fine otherwise.
- On all computers, you will receive an access violation error if you disable themes, then shut down ControlMyNikon, then attempt to enable the themes later. This makes themes unavailable. As a workaround, don't disable themes or if you have already done this, just leave the themes disabled and ControlMyNikon works fine otherwise.
- On all computers, you will receive an access violation error if you disable themes, then attempt to open a help window.
- On computers running Vista, the main window has a white border around it until you click on the window, in which case the border disappears.
- On all computers, some labels and text appears discolored if you disable themes.
- D3X: You cannot zoom in live view, but you should be able to.
- D5000, D90: Sometimes you shoot and then the shoot button remains disabled and the image is not transferred to the computer, requiring a restart of ControlMyNikon.
- On all computers, one or more spaces in the image folder name as defined in the profile tab will cause the 'Export to Zerene Stacker' function to fail. As a workaround, set the image folder location so that it does not have a space in the path.
- The main window position is not restored on the next startup of Cinematographer Pro. This issue is under investigation and should be fixed for the next version.
